Lagoons and northern lights, winter 2026

Soaking in hot water while the sky turns green is the picture everyone wants. It does happen. Here is how often, and which lagoon gives you the better shot this winter.

Two lagoons take most of the winter visitors from Reykjavík. The Blue Lagoon sits in a lava field on the Reykjanes peninsula, between Keflavík airport and the city. Sky Lagoon is on the shore of Kópavogur, about 7 km from downtown.

Both say you might see the aurora from the water. Both are lit after dark, close by 22:00 at the latest, and have some light around them. Here are the hours as of November 2026, and how much real darkness they leave you.

The quick answer

Yes, you can see the northern lights from both lagoons, but only on a clear night with a strong display, and only in the last two or three hours before closing. The Blue Lagoon is open 08:00 to 22:00 from 21 August to 21 June, and you leave the water by 21:30. Sky Lagoon closes at 21:00 or 22:00 in winter depending on the source, so check its site. For a real hunt, soak first and take a tour afterwards.

Can you see the Northern Lights from the Blue Lagoon?

Sometimes. The Blue Lagoon itself says you might if you are lucky. You need a strong display, a clear sky and an evening slot.

The lagoon's own winter page says: "If you're lucky, you might even see the aurora borealis, making your soak feel truly otherworldly." It also adds that "the show is weather- and solar-activity dependent." Fair enough.

Two things work against you. The lagoon and its buildings are lit after dark, and the water steams hard in the cold, so a faint aurora simply disappears. A bright one, the kind that moves and shows colour, is easy to see overhead.

Timing matters most. In mid-December the sky is fully dark from about 19:00, and you leave the water at 21:30. That is two and a half hours. In mid-October it is under an hour. Book the latest entry you can get.

What are the Blue Lagoon's opening hours in winter 2026?

08:00 to 22:00 every day from 21 August 2026 to 21 June 2027. Guests leave the water 30 minutes before closing.

The hours come from bluelagoon.com: 07:00 to 23:00 from 22 June to 20 August, and 08:00 to 22:00 the rest of the year. The lagoon is open every day of the year and rarely closes in winter, except in extreme weather such as hurricane-force winds.

The other risk is the ground. Since November 2023 the eruptions at the Sundhnúkur craters near Grindavík have closed the lagoon several times, and in November 2024 lava reached its car park (Wikipedia keeps the list). Check bluelagoon.com on the morning of your visit.

Children can go in from age two, and those aged eight and younger wear armbands, free at the entrance (Blue Lagoon support). Most guests stay about four hours in total, two of them in the water.

Can you see the Northern Lights from Sky Lagoon?

It is possible, but harder. Sky Lagoon sits inside the capital area, and the city glow hides all but strong displays.

Sky Lagoon's listing on Visit Reykjavík says: "If you are lucky, the northern lights may even put on an enchanting show during our darker months." It is at Vesturvör 44, on the tip of the Kársnes peninsula in Kópavogur, with an infinity edge that looks out over the sea.

The sea side is the dark side, which helps. Behind you is a suburb and, beyond it, the lights of Reykjavík. Expect to see the aurora here on the same nights you could see it from the waterfront downtown: the strong ones.

Sky Lagoon is for adults and older teens. Children under 12 are not allowed, and those aged 12 to 14 need a guardian with them (Guide to Iceland).

What are Sky Lagoon's winter opening hours?

Plan on a 21:00 close in winter. Published sources disagree between 21:00 and 22:00, so check the official page when you book.

Sky Lagoon's own opening hours page only loads in a full browser, and we could not read it for this post. Visit Reykjavík lists 09:00 to 22:00 every day. Iceland's pool directory sundlaugar.is and Guide to Iceland both give the seasonal timetable below, with a 21:00 close from 21 October to 30 April. Either way, guests leave the lagoon 30 minutes before closing.

Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon for a northern lights evening?

The Blue Lagoon, by a small margin: darker surroundings and up to an hour more after dark. Sky Lagoon wins on distance from town.

If seeing the aurora from the water is the point, pick the Blue Lagoon and the last entry slot. If you want a soak that fits before a tour pickup, Sky Lagoon is the easier one. Neither replaces a hunt; a guide can drive away from cloud, a lagoon cannot.

How do you combine a lagoon and an aurora tour on the same night?

Book a combo that includes both, or soak in the late afternoon and get picked up for a tour at about 20:30 to 21:00.

The all-in option is the Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon and northern lights day with BusTravel Iceland: Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss and Kerið, about 90 minutes at the Blue Lagoon with a Comfort ticket (towel, silica mask, one drink), dinner there at your own cost, then the aurora hunt. It runs 15 hours, from $330, ages 14 and up, and it is rated 4.8 from 271 reviews. Bring swimwear. If you see no lights, you can join their northern lights bus tour on another night for free.

The do-it-yourself version: Sky Lagoon from about 17:00 to 19:00, a quick dinner, then a pickup. The super jeep tour collects at 20:30 or 21:30 depending on the season, and Gray Line leaves at 21:00 from October to mid-March.

There is a free option too. At Grótta lighthouse in Seltjarnarnes, about 5 km from downtown, the small Kvika footbath sits by the shore in one of the darkest spots in town. Our city guide lists the others.
