Reykjavík darkness calendar 2026-27

The aurora is up there in daylight too. You just can't see it. Here is when the dark really starts in Reykjavík this winter, and which weeks the moon stays out of the way.

Reykjavík sits at 64 degrees north, just south of the Arctic Circle. The sun rises every day of the year, but in late December it manages only about four hours above the horizon. In June it hardly sets.

For the northern lights, the number that matters is not sunset. It is when the sky gets fully dark, and how bright the moon is that week. Every time below is for Reykjavík, which keeps UTC all year with no summer time.

The quick answer

Full darkness returns to Reykjavík on 2 September 2026 and lasts until about 9 April 2027. On 21 December the sun is up for only 4 hours 7 minutes (11:22 to 15:29), and the sky is fully dark from 18:57 to 07:53. The darkest weeks for hunting sit around the new moons: 9 November, 9 December, 7 January, 6 February and 8 March.

When does it get dark enough to see the northern lights in Reykjavík?

Nights start to darken in late August. Full astronomical darkness is back from 2 September 2026 and lasts until about 9 April 2027.

Gray Line gives the season as late August to mid-April, and Visit Reykjavík says the evenings are dark enough from late September to early April. From May to mid-August you will not see the aurora at all. It is still there. The sky is simply too bright.

Astronomers call the sky fully dark once the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon. In Reykjavík that first happens again on the night of 2 September 2026, and the last such night of the season is around 9 April 2027 (timeanddate.com has the tables). A strong display can show in the deep blue twilight either side of those dates, which is why tours start in late August.

Tour times follow the dark. Gray Line's coach tour runs 22:00 to 01:00 from 25 August to 30 September and from 15 March to 15 April, and 21:00 to midnight from 1 October to 14 March, according to its listing.

What are Reykjavík's sunrise, sunset and dark hours, month by month?

Daylight drops from 14.5 hours on 1 September to just over 4 hours at the solstice, then climbs back to 15 hours by mid-April.

Times are for central Reykjavík; a day either side moves them by a few minutes. "Fully dark" means astronomical darkness, the window when even faint aurora can show. Source: timeanddate.com, Reykjavík sun tables.

Look at the last column. In mid-September you get under five hours of real dark. Around the solstice it is close to 13.

When are the full moons and new moons in winter 2026-27?

New moons fall on 10 October, 9 November, 9 December, 7 January, 6 February and 8 March. Each full moon comes about two weeks later.

A full moon does not cancel the aurora. It lights the sky enough to wash out faint displays, while a strong one still shows clearly. Photographers often like a half moon: the mountains and snow get some light, the sky stays dark enough for colour.

The best nights sit within about five days of a new moon. If your dates are flexible, aim for those. If they are not, go anyway; cloud costs you far more nights than the moon does. Dates and times from timeanddate.com's Reykjavík moon phases, in local time.

What time do northern lights tours leave Reykjavík each month?

Most land tours leave between 20:30 and 22:00. Earlier in mid-winter, later in September and from mid-March.

Visit Reykjavík says the lights are most often seen between 22:00 and 02:00, and tour times are built around that. Gray Line leaves at 21:00 from October to mid-March and at 22:00 in the lighter shoulder weeks. Arctic Adventures picks up for the super jeep tour at 20:30 or 21:30 depending on the season, and collecting everyone can take half an hour.

Expect to be back between midnight and 01:30. If you want an early night before a day trip, the boats are shorter: about two hours on the yacht from the Old Harbour, two and a half on the Special Tours boat.

Whether the tour runs at all is decided earlier. BusTravel posts its decision around 16:00, Arctic Adventures by 18:15, and Gray Line the day before.

How do you plan the short winter days around an aurora night?

Use the four to six hours of daylight for one outing, rest in the late afternoon, and keep the evening free for the tour.

On 1 December the sun is up from 10:45 to 15:47. A Golden Circle day trip leaves in the dark and comes home in the dark, which is fine: the stops are lit by the low sun around midday. Then sleep for an hour. Aurora tours rarely get you back before midnight.

A few combinations work well in winter:

Which weeks of winter 2026-27 are best for aurora hunting?

The new-moon weeks of October, November, February and March: long nights, a dark sky and the equinox boost in activity.

Put the two tables together and a short list falls out. These are the windows we would aim for, each centred on a new moon:

  • 5 to 15 October 2026: dark from about 21:00, autumn colours by day.
  • 4 to 14 November 2026: dark from about 19:30, before the deep winter.
  • 4 to 14 December 2026: the longest nights, if you can live with five-hour days.
  • 1 to 11 February 2027: long nights, more daylight, snow likely.
  • 3 to 13 March 2027: equinox month, dark from about 22:00.

Solar activity has its own seasons too; our 2026-27 outlook explains why the equinox months get more storms. None of this beats the weather, and the forecast guide shows how to read the cloud map on the day.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours of daylight does Reykjavík get in December?

About four to five. On 21 December 2026 the sun rises at 11:22 and sets at 15:29, which is 4 hours 7 minutes of daylight.

Can you see the Northern Lights in Reykjavík tonight?

From 2 September 2026 to about 9 April 2027 the sky gets fully dark every night. Check the cloud map on the Icelandic Met Office aurora forecast in the afternoon: clear sky plus activity of 2 or more is a good start.

Does a full moon stop you seeing the northern lights?

No. It washes out faint displays, but a strong aurora still shows clearly under a full moon, and the moonlight helps landscape photos.

Can you see the northern lights in Iceland in summer?

No. From May to mid-August the sky never gets dark enough, even though the aurora is still there.
